Typically, Calpurnia kept her work and personal lives separate. Her children were not allowed to traipse around the labs. Her Rocket lackeys did not swing by for holiday dinners. But the attack on Petalburg had blurred those lines. There were now combat footprints in her garden beds. Uniformed officers often walked by with guns in their hands. All the blinders in the world couldn’t make things feel normal.

So, there was no reason to be so strict about the line between work and play. Her current research—related to Rayquaza—required a visit to some Draconid ruins. It seemed like a simple enough task. The only thing to fret over there were dusty bones and difficult-to-translate texts. This lead Calpurnia to kill two birds with one figurative stone. She would finally let Lavi help her with work, and she’d save herself from dealing with a surly grunt.

With some help from her Charizard—Mel—the pair landed outside the temple. As their feet touched down, Purrseus joined them in a burst of light. His muzzle wrinkled at the feeling of sand beneath his feet. Little toes stood on end as he tiptoed toward a nearby stone tile. “Remember the rules, Lavinia.” Her daughter was intelligent, but teenagers could be so very reckless.

Her mind shifts briefly to Cass and their last conversation. Since her departure, mother’s tight hold had become a strangling one. “And, for the love of the holy goat, do not touch anything.”

If there existed anything that unnerved Lavinia more than the simple presence of Pokémon, it was riding atop them. This being her mom's Charizard was the only thing that made it bearable, but the fact that Mel could drop her from a great height made it much less so. She didn't complain, though. She always did her best not to complain, and besides she'd asked to come; which she didn't expect would be allowed, in truth. Even now, she couldn't quite believe it.

Upon dismounting, Lavinia didn't even mind the weakness in her legs, as she was occupied looking up at the ruins with a growing sense of wonder. She'd loved field research in science camp, but getting to do it with her mother was — Right. The rules. Get a grip, Lavinia, she told herself in spite of the fact that she had remained primly composed. Now, she gazed downwards and gave a brief nod. "Of course, Mom."

Their relation aside, this was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to watch a great scientist in action. She had to perform better than ever before. So, even though she chafed at that last remark — she'd barely moved a muscle and already her mother was swearing by the holy goat —, Lavinia did not dispute it.

Instead the teen stood as straight as a ramrod and answered, "Yes, Mother," hands folding in front as she waited for Calpurnia to take the lead.

The woman quickly returns the Charizard to his ball. The idea of imprisoning a sentient creature does not bother her in the slightest. Pokemon were merely tools. They were to be used when needed and discarded or removed when not. Her darling Purrsy was the exception to that rule.

Both obedient utterances received a charming smile of acceptance. She really did like when people did what she said. It made things much less troublesome.

“Thank you, dear.” In truth, she trusted her daughter to be more helpful than any grunt. Just a few months ago, one had tried to help her with rabid Combees. She had ended up having to save his useless behind. Then, there was that lucky but incompetent dirty streamer Andrew Fisher.

As they approached the entrance to the dig site, Calpurnia paused. From her bag she pulled out two miniature gas masks. A lot of those silly curses were just from the dirty air in these places. That or black mold that’d been allowed to propagate in the dark. The idea of mummies and the undead were preposterous. How could something bandaged from head to toe even walk in the first place? “Put this on.”

Clicking her own mask into place, Calpurnia moved into the darkness ahead of them. The old stairs stirred up dust with each step. Calpurnia laments her shoes. A flashlight appears in her hands as they work their way into the belly of the tomb. “Keep your eyes out for any irregularities.” Temples like this were typically full of booby traps.

There’s a strange rattling down as the path breaks in two. A Rabsca rolls down the path in front of them in an apparent panic. It doesn’t even look at them as it rolls in the opposite direction. Down the tunnel, something moans.

“This way, Lavinia.” She sets off toward whatever had scared the little cockroach.

Obedience did not always come easily to the elder Kubrick, not with the pride she'd inherited from none other than the very woman she had to obey; but it was always well worth the sacrifice. The sight of her mother's smile made her feel as warm now as it had when she was a girl, and she promptly returned that beloved smile with a dazzling one of her own.

"Oh, of course, Mommy," Lavinia answered easily, relaxing enough to slip back into her usual displays of affection. If they had been at home, she would have walked right over and kissed Kelpie's cheek. They were on the job, though — just the thought sent a thrill of excitement through her —, so she contented herself with adding, "No thanks needed."

Maybe that was overdoing it, as she did in fact appreciate the thanks, but she'd never spared any effort when it came to pleasing her mother and she wasn't going to start now. Calpurnia had more than enough reasons to be displeased, what with Cass' latest fit of temper, and it cost the eldest daughter nothing to try and ensure she was happy where possible. As such, Lavi took the mask and put it on promptly, murmuring thanks of her own.

She followed her mother into the darkness without hesitation as well, but at the next set of instructions she decided to do better than simply acquiescing. "Got it," she said briefly, then grabbed Linus' PokéBall, "but I'll do you one better, Mom."

She tossed the Master Ball into the air and said without preamble, "Scout ahead for irregularities, traps, whatever. Disable what you can, and report on what you can't."

The Espeon, who knew her mother as well as she did, went deeper into the ruins with hardly a sound. They walked onward, but when a Rabsca rolled past them, Lavinia had to bite back a shriek. It made sense to go see what had scared the disgusting little bug, though the teen hoped it wasn't anything that would scare her. Although, whatever it might be, Linus was sure to have sensed it and be on his way back with intel; or so she told herself.

Calpurnia enjoyed obedience. That look of worship and adoration sent a tremble through her that no one could match. Flattery really could get you anywhere with her. A small smile crept onto her face in response. A simple nod serving as a show of thanks.

Honestly, she was delighted to have Lavinia along for the ride. But it would not do to let her eldest get complacent. The girl’s brag earns a chuckle and raised brow. It’s hard to deny the incredulity in her voice. “Will you now?” The scientist watched as the Espeon took to the stage. Purrseus watched the smaller cat disappear without comment. He never liked Linus. He was simply proof that his kind had not been good enough for the eldest.

“It’s just a bug, Lavinia.” The scientist murmured to her uptight offspring. “You could squish it if you had to.” Though she would not advise it. Even if that ball wasn’t foul, it would end up all over someone’s shoes. It’d take ages to clean them off.

As they entered the tunnel proper, Calpurnia’s eyes were drawn to a mural on the wall. Her mouth pursed. “Charming.” It was a violent depiction of a war. Whatever king built this place was shown dying a hero’s death. But there was something off about the—why was only one piece of it a gemstone? There was a strange coldness to this part of the wall. “Get back.”

The woman pressed on the ruby. CRRRRRRRNK! Something grated beyond a wall as something shifted in the gloom. A hidden door, perhaps? The start of a trap that would spell their doom?

In hindsight, Lavinia should have known that the most difficult part of a work day with her mother wouldn't be anything technical, but simply refraining from physical touch. Or, well, maybe she was overestimating herself now that her anxiety had passed; but it really did take effort to keep from bounding to her mother's side at the sight of that smaller smile. She would have to make up for it once they were home, she decided.

For now there was work to be done, though Linus was doing all the heavy lifting so far. He'd better be doing it well too, as she had to back up that little brag from earlier; but she trusted him to deliver, as he knew her better than most.

The only person whose knowledge rivaled the Espeon's was standing beside her, and so Lavinia didn't have it in her to be embarrassed at her fear being remarked on. Of course her mom had noticed.

"Mhm," Lavinia murmured, the reassurance cracking her composure some. She allowed herself to take hold of her mom's hand and give it a squeeze before drawing back. To reassure Kelpie in turn, she grinned. "I could, but then I'd have its remains all over my shoes. No thank you."

The moment of playfulness was short-lived, as no sooner did they enter the tunnel than something caught her mother's attention. Lavinia obeyed by sheer reflex, ripping her gaze away from the mural and stepping back hurriedly, before she noticed what Calpurnia was actually doing. Oh, this was so not a good idea.

"Uh, Mom —"

There was no time to form a protest before the stone began to shift, which was perhaps good as far as Lavinia's stellar behavior was concerned, but very likely bad when it came to her continued existence. So much for being a skeptic. If they survived this, she would have to show her mom some horror movie tropes. In the meanwhile, she brought Kalliope out and buried her nails into her palms. With a ponderous noise the wall moved to reveal a passageway, out of which came...

... Oh, thank the holy goat, it was just Linus.

Yet Lavi's relief lasted only a few seconds; that is, the amount of time it took for her to notice that his fur was continuously rippling and his tail was flicking at a speed she'd seen only once before, when they'd confronted jayden cross. Worst of all, the gem on his forehead was shining while he used his Future Sight.
